The Golden Cone

The Golden Cone is an environmental art work situated at Rokua's Ahveroinen pond.

The Story

The Golden Cone tells of the ancient memory of trees. The story of the pine forest that grows on the site began a long time ago. The pine seed develops under the shelter of the pine scales and in time sprouts a new life, carrying the tree’s entire history with it from year to year.

Old stories have also been recorded here, which gave rise to the idea of bringing the stories to the present day and giving young people in particular something to look forward to in the future. The seeds of the Golden Cone are a record of young people’s hopes and thoughts about nature and its future, as well as reflections on their relationship with nature.

The Artists

The work was designed and created by visual artist Satu Kalliokuusi and sculptor Reetta Gröhn-Soininen, who have worked together as artists and curators on several projects. In their works, they emphasise ecology, recycled and natural materials, nature conservation and the preservation of natural heritage. In addition to their artistic work, they have also worked as teachers of visual arts in schools for children and young people, work schools and art colleges.

The Builders

The Colden Cone was prepared in open workshops in the fall of 2023 and spring 2024. Pupils from the Utajärvi elementary school and Vaala upper secondary school took part in creating the work.

The Journey of Discovery in Art

The seven works of art in the Journey of Discovery in Art project highlight the natural and cultural heritage of the landscapes in the Rokua Geopark area, recognised as being of national importance, through environmental art. The works are inspired by three main themes: geological heritage, tar, and legends. The works have been funded by the Council of Oulu Region (AKKE funding) and the founders of Rokua Geopark (the municipalities of Muhos, Utajärvi and Vaala, the Rokuan Terveys- ja Kuntouttamissäätiö foundation and Metsähallitus) and commissioned by Humanpolis.
